The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is a much-anticipated event that takes place at the Fair Grounds Racecourse in downtown New Orleans. It's been two years since the last Jazz Festival, and although Covid-19 cases are increasing again in Louisiana, there will be no vaccination, test or mask mandate to attend the festival. If you're planning to attend the festival, it's important to know what you can and can't bring. The Jazz Festival allows bags that are quite small, so it should be OK to bring your own backpack or diaper bag.
Refrigerators and outside food or beverages are not allowed (except bottled water). Drinking water is allowed in, but must be in full, sealed, store-bought bottles. Empty reusable water bottles and hydration systems such as CamelBaks are also allowed in. Place items such as smartphones in plastic bags to waterproof them.
October in New Orleans is pleasant, usually cool with a warm breeze, so check the forecast and plan accordingly. If it has rained, put on rain boots (because there will almost certainly be mud). We also suggest sunscreen and hat, regardless of the time of year. New Orleans is a well-established party town, and with it comes the temptation to go overboard, especially for out-of-town guests.
If you're going to drink alcohol, make sure you hunt it down with a little water. Water is your friend at the festival. Be sure to keep in mind the heat, which can be intense, especially if you party all day. Not drinking alcohol is also a smart decision, and there are plenty of delicious non-alcoholic options at Jazz Fest. If you haven't tried rosemary iced tea, you're missing out! There are many unique crafts from artisans who set up stands at the Jazz Fest.
Make sure you have enough water and other supplies before heading out to the festival. The Jazz Fest Express ticket and tickets are available for sale on the days of the Festival at these locations or in advance. Only Jazz-Fest Express vehicles will use a special ticket to avoid traffic and take Festival attendees to the Festival gates. Attending the New Orleans Jazz Festival is an exciting experience that should be enjoyed responsibly. Make sure you plan ahead and know what you can and can't bring so that you can have a safe and enjoyable time.
